Okay, we actually knew what we were doing. I just needed a catchy title. I have been really itching to start working on our basement. I have been trying to come up with design ideas. Like many other ladies out there, I have a severe addiction to Pinterest. I have a dedicated pin-board called “Basement Brainstorm.” It’s serious business, guys. So I found a picture of a nook under the stairs. It instantly became a must have. I showed it to Aaron, and we came up with our own twist of it, and went and got the hammers.
I love the way the stairs are exposed, and the inviting feeling I get when I look at that nook. We took our idea to my dad, who has done MANY renovation projects in his day. He built the house I grew up in from the ground up, with his own hands. He has redone several basements in the neighborhood. He knows his stuff. He said, “Yeah, you could totally do that under your stairs, and I will help you.” Me and Aaron are thrilled to have such a great teacher to help us learn the Handy Way.
This is the boring old wall before. Just looking at it makes you want to kick a hole in it, right?
We started pulling out the sheet rock, and this is what flew out of the wall. Can you tell what it is? Look close. Yeah, it’s gross. Really really gross.
A DEAD BIRD. How long has it been there? Oh I don’t know. How did it get stuck in a basement wall? Who knows. Nasty.
I knew tearing down a wall would be messy, but I didn’t anticipate THIS much of a mess. It took twelve garbage bags to hold all the junk and rubble from this one wall.
Here’s what it looked like when we finally got the mess contained. (It took 3 evenings to haul out the dry wall and several times vacuuming.)
