Kitchen Time Is Here!

(Did you sing the title of this post to the Charlie Brown tune of Christmas?  If you did, we’re best friends.)

Remember when Aaron was at work one day and I started kitchen demo by myself?

Kitchen DemolitionRight.  Like I was saying… We knocked out a few walls, closets, and pantries (oh my!).  Next came getting all kinds of bids and quotes.

Except, I wasn’t very happy with them.  SEVERAL different companies came and went telling me all kinds of different things.  But none of it was doing it for me.  Like pumpkin pie.  Ew.

After doing some research, Aaron and I were leaning towards an IKEA kitchen.  They get great reviews, and you really can’t beat the cost.  We were getting quoted between $20,000-$30,000 for our kitchen to be finished.  Not cool Robert Frost.  We can do a custom kitchen with IKEA for $10,000 (including the cost of brand new appliances).  That’s a number that I can accept.  In fact, it’s welcomed. It’s less than what we had budgeted for our complete kitchen re-do.

We’ve been working with the yellow referees IKEA professionals on putting together our kitchen design.  And without further ado- might I remind you what we live in:

Ikea Kitchen

(The 3D rendering wouldn’t let us add a hallway, so there’s a door.  But just remember, IRL: HALL WAY!)

Ikea KitchenSo the plan for the west wall of the dining room is this:
There is 5 feet of counter top which will be used as a buffet.  Cabinets above and below will make it feel like a built in hutch.  The closet to the left of the buffet is for vacuum and broom storage.  The closet to the right is pantry, equipped with slide-out shelves.

There will be 80″ of added counter space to the right of the range.  There are shallow cabinets under for storage.  So much storage to hide all my things.  STORE ALL THE THINGS!  The 3D rendering couldn’t generate the full counter top, but IRL, it will come all the way out so it can be used as a bar.

Like this picture I drew, lolz.

The rendering didn’t show the little touches, so I’ll show you what we’ve got so far.

The door fronts we are going with are the LIDINGO.  The Lidingo ate your baby!  Hardware: TYDA.  We’ll be doing a grey subway tile backsplash similar to this one.

The counter tops are a dark grey quartz.  It’ll look pretty rad, I do believe.

I don’t know how long we’ll be in our house, so I didn’t want to get too crazy with the finishes.  I want to be able to sell it easily when the time comes.

The install guys will be coming on July 10th for the final last check.  The install will happen before July is over.

And there you have it.  Our future kitchen.  I will be SO tickled to have a pantry again.  Ain’t nobody got time to walk downstairs to the food storage room.  I’ll also be really excited to have a built-in buffet (and extra bar counters) so we don’t have to lose our table every time we have a party.

    • Kenz

yes please! I think we need to have a blog party at my house!

  • Gretchen

So exciting! And all that storage! I can’t wait! (It’s extra fun for me, because I’m not the one who has to live w/o a kitchen while it’s going in)

    • Kenz

haha, I think we’ve lived with the worst of it. It won’t be too bad between tearing out all the old stuff and putting it in. The only “down” time should be a weekend. If everything goes as planned. I’m sure it won’t though. lol.

  • Simply Sarah

Love it! That grey til is GORGEOUS. The storage that below the countertop/bar area- ingenious! Seriously, though you have to wait til July!? Ahhhhhh!!! it will be worth it though!

    • Kenz

I’m SUPER excited about that tile too 🙂 Can you believe July is the SOONEST they can come? I guess we aren’t the only ones trying to get our new kitchen installed!

  • Ainhoa

You’re pretty much installing my dream kitchen! Love all the choices you made. I’m especially jealous about the quartz countertops and the “hutch”.

    • Kenz

I’m so excited about the counter tops too. I’ve been drooling over them for the past year. I will NOT miss the faux butcher block counter we have now. 🙂

  • Emma (Broke Ass Home)

Oh I’m so excited! So much room for activities!

    • Kenz

haha, SO MUCH ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES!!! I love activities 🙂

  • Kenz

haha, I know, July seems like so far away… but it’s really not that bad! I wish it would be sooner. But those dang IKEA-ers… that’s the soonest they are able to. I’m fine with that though. I’m just happy we are moving in the right direction 🙂

  • Wow, it’s going to look soooo wonderful! I love the addition of the long island counter area. Can I leave a piece of advise….I have not hear very good reviews on the IKEA stoves. I would look into that a little bit! Other than that, congrats on the new kitch!

    • Oh, I hadn’t heard that! What has been your experience with IKEA stoves?? I’m definitely going to need to look into that more. Thanks for stopping by Diane 🙂

  • Michelle

The Lindigo ate your baby???? That’s all I got from this post. 😉

LOVE the plans! That grey subway tile is quite stunning!

  • eranfaraway

Sooooo excited for you! This just made my day!

    • Well thank you. I am REALLY excited. And, I cannot lie. I’m excited that I don’t really have to DIY that much of it. Haha, I’m a fraud. Or just lazy.

      • eranfaraway

You are neither! You and Aaron designed it yourselves and also knew when it was most practical to call in professionals. DIY enthusiasts don’t have to do everything themselves! That would be too crazy

        • Kenz

haha, k. I feel better now. You are a peach 🙂

  • Tara @ Surburble

I’m so excited! I can’t wait to see in while it’s in progress.

Also – your hand-drawn rendering is fantastic! A work of art! 🙂

p.s. I started a demo whilst my husband was at work one day, too. He was medium-to-not-impressed when he came home and the baby was sitting in an exersaucer and a whole wall was sitting in a heap beside her.

“Welcome home, sweetie! I’m pretty sure that this wall isn’t load-bearing!”

    • Kenz

bahahahahaah! We were meant to be best friends 🙂

  • Henriette

It’s such a hassle to comment from my phone – but this time I had to, this looks very good! And! Our cabinets was filled with the old lady’s stuff when we moved in, so we just jammed our things in between 😉

(And love the first picture, so cute)

    • Thanks Henriette! I love your old-lady-house. It’s perfect. How are things coming with it? I need an update!

      • Henriette

Well, it looks the same as when we moved in 😉 my brother list his apartment, so he lived here for a couple of months, and the we couldn’t really do anything since his things were everywhere! But now we have finally decided to build a bathroom downstairs 🙂 and my grandmother is adopting the wine-red-velvet-couch so we have finally found a new one! Its being delivered the 19th, can’t wait! The first step towards OUR house 🙂

        • Kenz

Oh that is EXCITING! I can’t wait to see your new couch. Furniture is the best. xoxo
