Living Room

Aaron and I have both fallen down the mid-century modern hole, and it doesn’t look like we’re getting out any time soon.  Something about the simplicity, clean lines, skinny legs, warm wood that makes a heart flutter.  If we stay on this road, I’ll be cutting my hair into a bob, burning all my jeans, and changing my name to June before you know it.

Keep in mind, like the kitchen and breakfast nook, everything is still REALLY minimal.   We are still trying to figure out what we’d like to hang on the walls, coffee table vs ottoman, what curtains we want, and different lamp options.

We put our old couch from the basement at our old house in the living room and it was all wrong.  The shape of the sectional was wrong for the shape of the room, and it was too bulky looking.  And thus began the new couch hunt.

ugly couch

I set out for the post office one morning, and took a detour to IKEA.  And the heavens smiled down on me.  The floor model of Karlstad U-shaped sectional had just been moved off the show floor and down to AS-IS, and was marked down 40% from its original price.  I’ll take it!  I lived in a couch-maze for a week while I tried to quickly sell old beige.

I knew I wanted a Kilim rug for the living room.  I was able to find this one on Etsy for a screaming deal.

This couch fits the space SO much better than our old one.

For the living room, we plan on wall-mounting the TV.  I need to start looking for some good art as well.  I want to get curtains, but I’m not really sure if I want to go for something strong and bold, or something soft and subtle.  I also want to change out the lamp.

I bought this TV stand from and painted the shell bright high gloss white.  It wasn’t worth writing its own blog post.

I really like the view over the Karlstad into the kitchen, and visa versa.  It’s really nice to be able to work in the kitchen and watch Evelyn play.

Speaking of Evelyn playing… while I was shooting this space she decided it would be a good time to have a parade and walk around while clapping.  So of course, I needed to take a video of it.  It’s a pretty great way to spend 34 seconds.  She disappears for a second but then she comes back.

She and the dogs are both enjoying the new couch.

We are all extremely happy to have a place to relax at the end of the day.  It’s a place we enjoy being.  It’s good to be home.

We love our Karlstad. It’s holding up well, it’s comfy, and being able to wash the covers has been awesome. Your space is looking so clean and bright. And your daughter is adorable. 🙂

Thanks Rita! Being able to wash the covers is my favorite part of the Karlstad. It’s genius. Gotta love those IKEA engineers.

  • what a steal on that sofa! it’s awesome!!! we had to buy new sofas when we moved, too- our sectional was purchased for our last house and was only 7 months old!!! we had no idea we’d be moving when we bought it. 🙂 love the direction this is all going!

It’s true how furniture has to change when we change homes. When I’m helping people buy homes, they’ll bring tape measures and be like “Hmmm, my bedroom set won’t fit here” “Or my table won’t work here” and it drives me crazy. Because in my head I’m like, “NO! Shop for a house for YOU not your furniture. Furniture can be changed.”

  • I love that couch! And I could just eat Evelyn up!

    • Kenz

      Evelyn is so delicious!

We bought a grey couch very similar to the karlstead (we don’t have ikea here, which sucks cause knock off ikea is proving to be expensive) and it’s our first “non leather couch” so we weren’t sure how it would hold up with dog wear and tear. The “no dogs on the couch” rule lasted about 5 minutes. Most of the evenings are spent with my husband and I on the floor and the baby and both dogs get the couch!

    • Kenz

Oh boy, I feel ya. Evelyn has learned how to climb onto the couch now. It’s hers and the dogs playground it seems. I’m REALLY glad we didn’t end up buying the sofa I really wanted from West Elm. I would be having panic attack if that were the case.

I don’t know which I like more, Evelyn or your couch. A hint for you, if I may, keep your colors in all your accents. That way you can change them at will.
So many colors go with grey, I can’t think of one that wouldn’t besides brown.
Just think you could do black accents or go to turquoise. The world is your oyster here.

    • Kenz

It’s true! I’m planning on bringing in the color with pillows and art. I just need to make a decision haha. It’s the little things that tend to hold me up!

  • Can I just say that your rug is to die for?! I love it! It goes so well with the rest of the room! And Evelyn is adorable as always 🙂

How does one shop for art? Do you buy it from places like Target or Ikea, or are you looking for stuff done by hand/a local artist? I’d be curious to hear about that process!

    • Kenz

Thank you! I love the rug so much! And I’m really really picky about art. I usually try to buy mine where I know people don’t shop, because I want things that are original. I am always looking on Etsy, or farmers markets if it’s summer. Or, make my own. I need to start getting things up on the wall soon though. They are so bare!

  • Amber @ Wills Casa

Love how Karl looks in your living room!! It’s seriously perfect for that space! I can’t believe you got it for 40%. Send some of that karma my way!

    • Kenz

Sending all the Karma I can muster up right to you! I wish I could come over and help you clean and get ready for your special shoot coming up!

  • Julia @cuckoo4design

    Evelyn is so cute.
I have been eyeing up the Karlstad sectional for out basement too. It looks so expensive and good in your home. Really love it

    • Kenz

The Karlstad is deceivingly chic. I’m the biggest fan of it. You should definitely consider it for your basement. They even have replacement legs you can get that make it look even more chic!

      • Julia @cuckoo4design

I didn’t even know about the replacement legs

        • kenz

I didn’t either until I was looking on Ikea’s webiste recently! The look like mini hairpin legs… I’ll see if I can find them then send you a link!

  • That baby of yours is upstaging your new couch! ;). For real, I love the way its coming together! That rug is so lovely, and great deal on the sectional! we’ve had one on our list for….years? now, and I’m hoping we’ll finally get it this winter. I just found out they were on sale all last month….like the day after the sale ended 🙁

    • Kenz

That baby of mine literally upstages my whole life haha. Everyone is far more interested in Evelyn Faye than me, and I’m totally okay with that. She’s pretty dang cute, so I don’t blame the world for loving her. I’m so glad you guys joined the Karlstad club. It’s basically the greatest addition to a living room that ever existed.

  • Tara @ Surburble

It’s coming along so nicely! I love the style you’re bringing into the space. I didn’t ever think of Etsy as a place to find a rug! (And I need one – desperately)

And Evelyn is so cute! Good job, mama!

    • Kenz

Who knew Etsy was such a great rug store?! haha! I’ve been trying to find a rug for the new nursery, and it’s not as easy this time, but I refuse to give up!

  • It is looking so good in here Kenz. Love all your new purchases!! Evelyn is just the cutest!!

    • Kenz

Thanks Katja! I’m so smitten with Evelyn. She’s the best 🙂

  • I love your new couch! I can’t believe it was 40% off – awesome deal! That rug is pretty great too 🙂

Also, I’m just realizing we have a similar living room/dining room/kitchen set up! 😀

    • Kenz

I love that our setups are so similar! It must mean it’s an extra great set up 🙂 I need to write a follow up to this post, because I was able to score even more furniture from the as-is section at ikea for this room. I love me a good deal!

  • I love that sectional in the space and that rug is stunning!

    • Kenz

Thank you! The rug and the sofa go so well together. I was nervous they would clash, but they ended up pairing so nice.

  • I love that sweet little E. What a cutie pie.

And the sectional really is great for your space. Perfect size. And that rug! Slap me hard and call me Sally. I love it.
