Navy, Gold, and White Master Bedroom

If you recall, we don’t have a headboard.  At our old house, we painted one on the wall.  Also, a little known fact, we were borrowing our bedroom furniture (night stands and dresser) from my seester.  So when we moved into our new house, this was the extent of our bedroom.  A bed.  We borrowed the lamp from Evelyn’s old room, and I was using a barstool as a night stand.  It was sterile.  It was empty.  It was a place to sleep.  It was boring.

I don’t know if this is normal or not (please weigh in on if you are/ aren’t), but I am a bedroom person.  I always have been.  From the time I was little, I enjoyed spending time in my bedroom.  I didn’t like playing or hanging out in the family room.  I’ve always retreated to my room.  Mom & Dad never had much luck punishing me by sending me to my room.  I wanted to be there.  And now, I spend a lot of time in my room.  When Evelyn wakes up, we snuggle and play in our master bedroom for awhile.  And after she goes to bed at night, I like to read, blog, catch up on real estate work, and watch TV in our room.  I know there is an opinion that rooms should be just for sleeping, and DEFINITELY no TV allowed.  But that’s not me.  It’s my comfortable place.  I love relaxing by sitting in my bed.

Now you know more about me (#themoreyouknow).  And now you understand why the above pictured wasn’t jiving me with.  If you follow me on Instagram, you already know this…  As part of my Christmas present, Aaron gave me painting supplies and promised me the uninterrupted time I so desperately wanted to work on a project.  And I chose our bedroom.

I found this headboard on the classifieds.  Isn’t it funny how 5 years ago everyone found gold and brass things and painted them oil rubbed bronze, and now we find oil rubbed bronze things to paint gold?

Spray painting this was a process.  First of all, we were in the single digits of temperatures.  Do you know how long spray paint takes to dry when it is 9 degrees outside?  Squints says it best, FORRRRREVVVVVERRRRR.  And as you know, when spray painting, the most important thing is several light coats.  So, this took 5 days.  Yes.  5 days.

Prime.  Gold.  Lacquer.  But I’m so glad I took my time.  (Yes, I wore a mask.  Yes, the area was well ventilated.)  There were no drips, and the finish is stunning.  It has a very professional factory finish because of the lacquer.

I wanted to paint the whole room Starless Night by Behr.  But, I got nervous.  Guys, it is a DARK color.  And I was worried it would suffocate the light.  Normally I don’t particularly care for just one solid color as an accent wall.  I feel like an accent wall should make a real statement, not break up the flow of a room.  But I wanted to test this color, and I figured the best way was on just one wall for now, and if we loved it, then go ahead and paint the rest of the room.

For months I have been looking on the classifieds for the right night stands to makeover.  And there was just nothing.  So I finally found these nightstands from  And this is what we ended up with, in just a few short days over Christmas break:

The bedding is the same we had from our last bedroom makeover (West Elm).  I get a lot of questions about how the white duvet cover holds up.  I bought it on black Friday 2 years ago, and it is still clean and bright.  We have 2 dogs and a baby.  That should tell you.  I wash and bleach it about once a month, or as needed.

This room isn’t done.  In fact, we are just getting started.  I have some plans for improving the lamps.  I have some art projects in mind to dress up the walls.  But it feels good to have a start.  It feels like “us.”  It’s a place I want to be.  (And yes, I’ve decided to go for it and finish painting the whole room Starless Night.  I just need to get up the energy to do it.  Growing a baby is hard…)

Thanks Cassie! I really suck at instagramming… is that a word? I need to get better though!

It looks great! We’re painting our living room, and it’s one wall at a time all the way. I did one in August, one in September, and just now finished the biggest wall. Probably won’t get to the next one until March. The brass looks so nice against that dark backdrop.

    • Kenz

I feel like I should never do the one-wall-at-a-time method again haha. I’ve lost all motivation. I REALLY need to get on that. I hope you’re doing well! I need to catch up on your new blog!

I painted our upstairs hallway a dark cobalt blue. I was a little worried about painting something that dark but the hallway (it’s actually wide enough for a desk or chair so a bit bigger than a regular hallway) gets a lot of light, thanks to a huge picture window on one end, so the room doesn’t look overly dark. I LOVE the color and the look. I was a little worried about how dark it was and at first I didn’t like it but once I got used to it it was great. Your room looks nice and bright so I was going to tell you to “go for it” and paint the rest of the walls blue but I see you already decided to do that! I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the room painted blue.

And yes, growing a baby is a lot of work. It doesn’t feel like you’re doing a lot of work but the whole lack of energy suggests otherwise.

Your hallway sounds beautiful Pamela! I agree that big windows make all the difference. I think since we have two big windows in our room that face south we’ll be okay with the dark color. I still haven’t gotten the energy to finish painting, but I’m excited to see what it looks like when we’re all done!

  • love, love, love the gold against the navy wall! And you already know how I feel about dark blue bedrooms :). You’re off to a fabulous start!

    • Kenz

It’s true Gretchen! I need to finish painting the room still, but I’m excited to be swallowed up in a sea of beautiful Navy 🙂

  • So pretty! I love wall color you chose and the headboard you found!

    • Kenz

Thank you! I had never really considered anything except an upholstered headboard, so I surprised myself when I found that and went for it. I actually LOVE it the longer we have it.

  • Amber @ Wills Casa

I admittedly am not a bedroom person. I love to be in bed, but I neglect putting an actual functioning bedroom space together. Mainly because no one sees it, so I’m not as motivated. I love the progress you’ve made in here. Those nightstands are awesome especially with antique-ness (probably made that word up) of the headboard. A really good mix of style and color!

    • Kenz

That totally makes sense. That’s how I’m feeling about Evelyn’s bedroom actually. No one sees it… and she doesn’t care, so it’s easy for me to leave it a wreck. I actually started a project in there that failed HORRIBLY. I still haven’t fixed it. I need to though. I feel guilty every time I go in there. And I know she could care less, but I feel like I owe her better haha. Am I CRAZY? Probably.

  • I LOOOOOVE the Behr Starless Night color. We have used it on our door and furniture, and now I think I need it on a wall.

Love how your bedroom is coming together. It’s really looking cozy.

    • Kenz

Starless Night is beautiful on furniture! I have a little music hutch that needs a new coat of paint, and I’m strongly considering using the leftover paint from our room. It’s delicious to my eyes haha

  • I am a bedroom person too. I always did the bedrooms first when we moved because I feel like you need a nice place to recharge to deal with the rest. 🙂

Love the blue. Can’t wait to see it on all the walls.

    • Kenz

YES that’s what I think too Janet! In our last house it took me awhile to do our bedroom, and I always would get really antsy in there. I wanted to jump on our bedroom first thing in this house. Aaron made me wait til after Christmas, so I waited two days haha then got started 🙂

  • Love it. We bought a house built in the 90s and it is FULL of cheapy-looking, yellow brass-plated fixtures. I have painted some of them in a darker, richer, gold or brass color and my hubby looks at me like I’m straight crazy every single time. Why yes, husband, I am painting this gold fixture a gold again. It’s just a better gold. 😀

    • Kenz

haha I totally get it Kelli! I’d do the same thing 🙂

  • Stephanie, Sandpaper and Glue

I am a bedroom person too.. if I am home from work or something Matt comes in and always jokes I’ve turned our room into “the dungeon” again. Because I close all the curtains, and shut off the lights, and just sit on my bed with the computer or tv. AND IT IS GLORIOUS. So yeah, I love your dark walls all around idea and I totally get it 🙂 haha

    • Kenz

haha, i’m so glad you get it 🙂 I love dark dungeon rooms meant for tv and computers haha!

  • Julia @cuckoo4design

Dark blue, white and gold is the perfect combination in my book! Looks so good

    • Kenz

Thanks Julia! I’m loving it so much!

  • I love that blue! I think it’s going to look incredible on all the walls! I am such a bedroom person too… I could sit in bed on my laptop all day and pretend it’s totally not lazy because I’m working 🙂

    • Kenz

YES! Laptops in bed are the best! It’s my favorite thing to do after Evelyn is asleep. I live for computer-in-bed time!

  • Annie

Hey, that’s the paint color of the wall in Benny’s room!

    • kenz

Great minds, I tell ya! It’s such a pretty color. I’m pretty obsessed with his room. It’s darling.
