Painted IKEA Billy Bookcases

We all know that painting the backs of bookcases are all the rage.  It’s a great way to add a pop of color without going too crazy.  I searched all over the classifieds, but couldn’t find anything that would suit the vision I was having for the nursery.

Two skinny IKEA Billys would do the job just fine though!  AND painting the back would be easier this way, since I could paint it all in one sweep, instead of taping off, and cutting in.  Ick.

Using the boxes the bookcases came in was a great way to not get paint everywhere, if you ever plan on doing this project.

A rich deep purple was my color of choice for this project.

The plan was one on either side of the crib.

However, with the flood of light in this room, everything is either extremely over-exposed, or wildly under-exposed.  I’m still working on my photog skillz, so don’t judge me for sucking at room pictures!  The color balance isn’t quite right, but this is the correct shade of purple, pulled straight from Sherwin-Williams’ site.  “Fully Purple” is her name… even though it almost looks a bit navy in my pictures.  I promise, IRL it’s a gorgeous purple.

Aw, symmetry.

These two are wondering when they get to use the fancy new dog bed/crate…  They are going to be so disappointed.

I love it! What an awesome way to add a splash without over-busy-ing the place! you’re brilliant! 🙂 Everything is really coming together and looks great! Smooch those boys for me, they are gonna be in for the shock of a lifetime in t-minus 42 days.

    • Kenz

Oh I wish I could claim brilliance on this one. I’ve been wanting to paint the back of a bookcase forever! Aren’t the boys so cute right now? Shaggy-tastic. I really hope they do well with the new baby. We will see!!!

      • Bethany Kline

Well, I’m definitely gonna be taking this idea from you, just FYI! 😉 and, I’m sure they’ll be great big brothers! Just make them feel important when she gets here, so that they don’t feel sad and left out. Something they suggest when you bring a new baby home when you already have kids is to bring the older kids a toy when you bring home the baby, that way they still know they are loved and have something to play with while you are getting settled in. Y’all should think about something like that for the boys, Just an idea!

        • Kenz

That is a great idea! 🙂

i love symmetry! especially the dogs. 😉 looks so cozy glam! i love it!

    • Kenz

Aren’t those pups delightful? haha! I love them! I’m excited for them to get their sister 🙂

  • Emma (Broke Ass Home)

I really love the purity of that purple. It’s a wonderful shade. And the boys are so handsome.

    • Kenz

I lovvvvvvvve the shade of purple. It’s so beautiful! It’s funny, because I never really liked purple, but now I’m all over it!

  • Purple and gold…how fun. Make sure to listen to those crazy ikea men and attach them to the wall 🙂 If that were my kid she’d be out of the crib and climbing up the bookshelf.

    • Kenz

Oh for sure! We are waiting just a couple days to make sure we love the spot they are in before we secure it. But we definitely are going to! We already have the mounting kits. I’m the biggest worrier ever 🙂

  • It really doesn’t get any better than purple and gold. Love how this room is coming together!

    • Kenz

Thanks Gretchen! I love the way the purple and gold play off each other. It’s so pretty in there.

  • Anu

Love the purple and that rug is fabulous!

    • Kenz

Thanks Anu! I’m really loving the over-dyed purple oriental rug too. It was my inspiration for the whole room!

  • I love it!! That wall is so beautiful.

    • Kenz

Thanks Mary Cole! I’m pretty much obsessed with it!

  • Jesse

I love the purple! That wall is amazing.. the purple & gold together is really cute.

    • Kenz

Thanks Jesse! I love the purple and gold so much!

  • Such a pretty color! I love how the curve of the crib plays off of the scalloped wall too! Inquiring minds (ahem, me) what to know: what’s going on the wall opposite the crib?

    • Kenz

I do need to show that wall, don’t I! It’s a lot more simple, since the room is so small. I haven’t really done what I plan on yet, but it will be a sort of gallery wall above a dresser. Pretty basic. 🙂

  • Rachel

Beautiful! One little comment, I know this baby wont be crawling or climbing up for a while and I am sure you already did it, but if you didn’t, don’t forget to attach those book cases to the wall.

    • Kenz

Oh we definitely will! We’re just making sure that we are set with their location, then they are getting secured to the wall. We already have the mounting kit 🙂

  • Michelle

This room is looking mighty stunning! I can see the dogs’ confusion. Dog crate. Baby crate. It’s all the same.

    • Kenz

It’s true. We put them in… and they didn’t want to come out. They are going to be so pissed when there is someone else stealing all the attention.

  • I love the scalloped walls and rug!!

    • Kenz

Thanks Autumn! I’m really happy with the way it’s coming together 🙂

  • I love the symmetry of the two shelves. I actually love this idea as replacements for end tables, too. You could use one of the shelves as the bedside table and then more room for display/books/etc.

I’ve been considering painting the back of the hutch in our dining room but I have yet to pull the trigger. You are inspiring me.

And your nursery is just gorgeous. I love seeing it come together.

    • Kenz

These would make such great nightstands! I love that idea. So much storage.
You should definitely paint the back of your hutch. If you make me a PSL I’ll be right over to help 🙂

  • Tara @ Surburble

This nursery is going to be jaw-droppingly awesome. My kids’ cluttered rooms of cray-cray are paling in comparison to this luxe bedroom.

Love the painted backs of the bookshelves. Such a nice touch, and the purple is feminine, but not frou-frou. Great choice!

    • Kenz

Oh, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until this becomes a cluttered toy-filled mess of a room. I have to have SOME kind of documentation that it once was a clean living space 🙂

  • Looks great Kenz 🙂 xo Kristin

    • Kenz

      thanks Kristin!

  • Katja @ Shift Ctrl ART

Love the symmetry and that purple is so perfect with the gold on the wall. Swoon.

    • Kenz

Thanks Katja! I’m glad I’m not the only symmetrically minded person around 🙂

  • Stephanie, Sandpaper and Glue

it’s coming together SO nicely in there. and I love that rug a ton.

    • Kenz

I can’t believe it’s all finally coming together. It’s making it so real! All we need is a little baby Evelyn 🙂

  • John @ Our Home from Scratch

    Nice color. Nursery looks awesome!

    • Kenz

Thanks John! I’ve never been a purple fan, but it’s really grown on me 🙂

  • kelly @ view along the way

Is it weird that I’m a little jealous of your baby? I hope we can still be friends. I just love the room so much! 🙂

    • Kenz

haha we can definitely always be friends 🙂

  • Julia @cuckoo4design

Love this so much. The purple looks great on the shelving

    • Kenz

      Thank you! 🙂

  • Amber @ Wills Casa

ALL the rage! I love the purple with the gold. Such a great (and trendy) combo. Little Evelyn is going to give all the UT babies nursery envy.

    • Kenz

hahaha! Nursery envy… 🙂 Hopefully that translates into making lots of friends and having play dates!

      • Amber @ Wills Casa

That’s exactly what nursery envy means. You already have this mom thing down.

  • Nicole Boenigk

I CAN NOT wait to see this finished room it looks soooo awesome already!!!!

    • Kenz

Thank you! I’ll be posting the reveal soon!
