Vintage Trailer Renovation

Vintage Trailer Renovation Happiness On Wheels

I am delighted to announce our new summer project!  Our summer renovation-menu will include the main dish of canned ham with a side of retro.

We bought a 1970s Rancho El Rae vintage bumper pull trailer.  The appliances and electrical are all in good working order.  So we will be fixing it up cosmetically.

The first thing we’ll be doing is an exterior paint job.  I’ve been pinning like crazy to this new board.  Here are some ideas of paint jobs I’ve found:

This project is a dream come true.  It has been a bucket list item to makeover an old trailer.  The great thing is, it’s still usable while we work on it.  We already have plans to take it out over Easter.  It was difficult to photograph, but here’s what the interior looks like:

It sleeps 5 (squishily).  The couch folds down to a double bed.  Above that, is a pull down double bed.  The table converts to a single bed.

To say I’m excited is the biggest understatement.  This is going to be a good time.

I love the inspiration pictures you have picked out. The interior is already so vintage-y and cute. I love that sconce and the turquoise color too. How great that electrical n stuff already works. Count me in for this ride 🙂

It’s the Millennium Falcon of trailers! Didn’t Aaron win it in a questionable card game?

    • Daniel Crowder

When it’s hitched up to the trailer, the Xtera can do .5 past lightspeed.

  • Rita

It is so stinkin’ cute just as it is! This is one of our fantasy projects, too. Can’t wait to see what you do with it.

    • Kenz

It really is charming on the inside. I love it very much 🙂

  • We just came off the road about 6 months ago after living and traveling in our RV for over two years. We loved it and saw a lot of vintage trailers like yours. There are groups of them that travel in caravans and have their own clubs. The decorations are sometimes over the top. With your creativity I can see all systems are full steam ahead. What fun you’ll have creating your own “wow” factor.

    • Kenz

Vickie, you’re the coolest! Ballet! Traveling via trailer! I need to be more like you 🙂

  • Caitlin

What a fun project!! Your creativity always amazes me–can’t wait to see what you guys do with it! Remember when we used to play uno in the RV parked in your parents backyard?!

    • Kenz

How could I forget?! It’s actually one of the things that inspired a trailer. I have so so so many memories of my parents’. Aaron and I have borrowed theirs a few times, but it’s really wearing out, so we figured it was time to get our own 🙂

  • How fun! I love how charming the interior is right now but I can’t wait to see what you guys have planned for it!

    • kenz

Thanks! I’ve been looking for some super fun wallpaper for the interior. I haven’t found “the one” yet… but I know it’s out there!

That’s it. You are adopting me. I love this project so much and can hardly wait to follow along. And it’s already so stinking adorable.

    • Kenz

You are officially adopted. Come along for the ride 🙂

  • eek! so fun! I can’t wait to follow along. I actually had two friends blogging about renovating trailers last year, and I was so jealous. Alas, we couldn’t even all fit in one anymore. Living vicariously!

    • Kenz

I have a solution! TWO trailers!

  • Super cute! I don’t think I personally would touch the teal cabinets! I love them! The floor and upholstery GONE! Can’t wait to see the reveal!

    • Kenz

We’re not quite sure what we’re going to do to the cabinets. But we are for sure redoing the floor and upholstery. Thanks for sticking around 🙂

  • Joani

Kenz, you are in for some awesome times. I used to travel in a trailer years and years and years ago, just like this when I was a kid. My grandparents took us all over the country in it. Amazing memories!

    • Kenz

Thanks Joani! We are so excited to be creating these memories!

  • Amber @ Wills Casa

I can’t get over how much I love this! Totally a Wills bucket list item for sure! I cannot wait to see you renovate this! It’s already adorable.

    • Kenz

I can’t wait for our OP caravanning. 🙂

  • thediynurse

    no. flippin. way.

I’m so freakin excited. Like seriously. This is a huge dream for me. Have you see Joy Prouty and her kids- they traveled across country with one they made up. I could totally see me and my cats and dog chillin in there. And that oven is too cute! I’m moving in!!!

    • Kenz

I need to look that up! It’s so much fun just hanging out in the trailer.

  • Addi

That is going to look so cute when you get done with it! Can’t wait!

    • Kenz

      Thanks babies!

  • JaneEllen

The little trailer you showed with aqua interior and white/yellow? is so much like our little trailer, so cute, gave me ideas to fix up ours. Needs some work on it in/out so boy I’ll be printing out photos you showed for ideas for ours. I miss going as hubs had stroke few years ago and he’s been hesitant to go camping, I miss it alot. We have a state park with small lake/campgrounds about 7 1/2 miles from our house.
You’ll have so much fun, personally I love little trailer, so cozy. We had another bigger trailer we lived in a few times for a few months, loved it, didn’t want to move to a house. (I’m also part gypsy). Can hardly wait to see what you do with your trailer. Looking forward to photos.
Our daughter and family have small trailer also, she decorated in Hawaiian decor and they went camping with their two girls, so cute and so much fun.

    Happy Spring days

    • Kenz

That’s so cool JaneEllen! We are definitely loving ours. We took it out over the weekend, and we are falling in love fast with trailer traveling. I hope you and your husband can get out more 🙂

  • Kristin Strickler Cadwallader

For real. I kid you not. I always wanted to get a vintage airstream and take a year to travel the country! So so cool Kenz! xo K

    • Kenz

Thanks Kristin! I would lovvvvvvve an airstream! They are so sweet. A little heavy on the pocket book, but it would be the first thing I buy when winning the lottery 🙂

  • Ashley

This is awesome. So excited for you! I don’t think I could ever convince my hubby to get one of these–he always says, “why take a trailer when you camp?! That’s not camping!!” So. Shoot.

    • Kenz

Haha, Aaron used to be that way. Until his parents got a trailer, and we went to Yellowstone with them. I’ve got him converted 🙂

  • anne @ wit wisdom and food

That looks like it will be a blast. I love what you have pinned so far. So excited to watch this project come together.

    • Kenz

Thanks! It’s been a lot of work, but I’m so excited to share what we’ve done so far.

  • Mindy

Eeeee, so awesome! I can’t remember where or how (5:00 wine drinking has set in), but I just stumbled upon your blog today. I’m a wee bit obsessed with old campers and my dream is to one day own and fix up an airstream. I’m a new follower, if only to see how this plays out. So exciting!

    • Kenz

Oh I would lovvvvvvve an airstream! We saw one this weekend while we were out. They are so expensive, but such quality!

  • Organics

Did you paint the appliances or were they already that color?

  • Tracie

I’m so happy for you, I know you are guys are having amazing adventures! The interior is just to die for, something out of the “The Long Trailer.”

    • kenz

I really like the interior. The cushions could use some love. They are pretty uncomfortable since they are the originals from the 70’s. But we’ve already had some really great trips. I’m looking forward to more!

  • The interior is already gorgeous with all those teal appliances! We recently scored a Vintage Trailer and I’ve been DYING to work on it. Off to go check out more posts on this baby!

    • kenz

Thanks Trisha! I’m sad I wasn’t able to work on the interior this summer, but I’m glad it can hold it’s own until I get my grubby hands on it 🙂
